The fortunes of 2008 looks bleak already for some teams in South East football. In the MSE, Kalangadoo are already visiting the ghosts of 07 after receiving a 98 pt thrashing from Nangwarry. Veterans Chris and Trevor Fenn played well and 10 individual Nangwarry goal-kickers added to Kalangadoo’s woes. Brian Casey was best for the Magpies. Kongorong took 3qtrs to shake off Pt MacDonnell to win by 43 pts with star junior basketballer Warrick McGinty excelling. Glenn Fry, 6 and Adam Stewart, 4 goals kept the Seasiders alive but it wasn’t enough. Tim Stringer again starred for Tantanoola and Rob Versace, 5 and Mark McCallum,6 goals were too strong for the Hatherleigh defence. Dave Green also got 6 for the Eagles but despite that and Jason Faulkner’s efforts it wasn’t to be and Tantanoola ran over the Eagles to win by 23 pts. Adam Weise led his team with 6 goals as Mt Burr comfortably defeated Robe by 28 pts. Chris Puiatti and Jon Agnew were very good around the packs for the Mozzies. Heath DeBoo with 8 goals was the only one to keep Robe alive.
Kaniva-Leeor United may not have beaten Penola but the 7 pt margin at least gives them some hope for the future as they had conceded a 39 pt start at ¼ t. Rohan Arney was best for Penola with Cam Hockey also effective. KLU steamed home on the efforts of Tuckwell, McCabe and Meyer but fell just short of victory. Luke Weise with 8 goals and John Mock with 5 crushed Padthaway by 144 pts as Mundulla were rarely challenged. Bordertown confirmed their improvement emphatically as they belted Border Districts by 86 pts. Tim Harkness was best on ground with 7 goals and youngster Clint Diment also gave a polished display. Ace goalkicker Phil Smith continues to be a headache for full-backs, his 8 goals for Lucindale enabled the Roo’s to take control after ½ t and defeat Kyby by 45pts. Mark Slotegraaf was excellent for the Tigers as was former coach Lee Curnow. Naracoorte came from 19pts down at 1/2t to swamp Kingston by 38pts. Brett Gould and Mitch Hartree were in everything for the Demons and Jamie Dixon booted 5 goals. Kingston have had 2 losses to start the season and appear to be struggling.
West Gambier recorded their 2nd win with a hard fought 3 goal margin over Casterton. Their recruits have blended in nicely with the youngsters to make the future look promising. Luke Davey, Jarrod Ryan and Adam Merrett all played big parts in the win. Dylan Ryan with 4 goals was the Cat’s best. Hamilton crushed Heywood 108pts but it should been more as they had only token opposition. Reigning premier Portland led by 12 pts at 3/4t but Imperials with 4 last quarter goals snatched victory in the last few minutes to win by 2pts. Grant Ewing was very good in an even Imps team. Marcus England was again impressive for Portland along with James Imbi. Millicent wasted their chances with poor goal- kicking in the 2nd qtr and South Gambier capitalized. Young stars Ash Bryant, Simon Berkefeld and Thomas Forgan stood out for South but Millicent’s older brigade were left to do too much. South by 41 pts. North Gambier took until after 1/2t to shake off East Gambier in an entertaining game at Vansittart Park. The East defence became a shambles as North stepped on the gas in the 3rd qtr and despite a brief 3 goal burst by East, the Tigers had too many forward options. Feisty redhead Brian Durbidge rattled his opponents but was also very damaging around the midfield whilst David Nulty and Scott Flett were dominant big-men. East had no four qtr contributors but Matt Scanlon and Robert Povey tried hard. North home by 23.
