APRIL 19 -- BREAST CANCER AWARENESS ROUND IN THE SOUTH EAST Footballers and netballers across the South-East will wear pink armbands during their games on April 19 as part of the region’s inaugural Breast Cancer Awareness Round.
The round is the initiative of the South East Football Affiliated Leagues Council and is designed to both raise awareness and much needed funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The council’s regional director Scott Duncan said today that the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League, Mid South East Football League and the Western Border Football League had all agreed to take part in the event.
“It’s not every day you get footballers agreeing to play in pink, but the support already shown underlines the empathy we all have for those thousands of families that have lost grandmothers, aunties, wives, mums, sisters, nieces or friends to breast cancer.
“A donation tin will be on the gate of all games and we hope footballers, netballers and all their supporters give generously,” he said. “This initiative is aimed at raising the awareness and vital funds for support programs and research into breast cancer.”
Mr Duncan said the three leagues had recently decided to instigate two promotions this season to raise awareness and funds for men’s and women’s health issues.
He said next week’s Breast Cancer Awareness Round will be followed by another in August, which will be aimed at raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Prostate cancer is one of the biggest killers of Australian men every year.
“Every person who attends the football and netball on April 19 will have been touched in some way by breast cancer,” Mr Duncan said. “There will be 16 games held across the region over this weekend and we hope to raise over $10,000. These funds will go directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to fund research for the prevention and cure of breast cancer.”
