The week that was in Hills Central Footy from Duane Schultz

The results from round six are in and it seems a pretty close competition with any one of seven teams laying their claim to finals action.

Mount Lofty, Mount Barker and Blackwood are all equally placed with 10 points-a-piece, with a small amount of percentage separating them.

Hahndorf sit fourth quietly going about their business, just a touch ahead of Uraidla and Onkaparinga Valley has recovered from some early losses to be a win behind them.

Ironbank are also threatening with three wins for the season.

Mount Lofty’s season keeps getting better with a 109 point thrashing of Bridgewater. Final scores read a massive 26.18 (174) for the Mountain Devils and a spirited 10.5 (65) to the Raiders. In dark conditions, where in another sport the umpires would’ve consulted their light metres, the Mountain Devils took a half to dispel any chance of a Raiders upset. It seems that the lower teams of the table certainly put the fight up to their higher placed opponents in round six as many of the matches showed tight first halves of footy.

Bridgewater showed determination and spirit in the first half, but the quality of the Mountain Devils eventually came up trumps. Michael O’Connor kicked five majors for Mount Lofty and Captain Heath Cutting lead his chargers with a best on ground performance. Jack Bevelander was best on ground for the Raiders, while Ben Pohl led the scorers for his team with three majors.

In other Hills Central action from round six Uraidla, lead by experienced Scotty Sutherland defeated Ironbank by 54 points. Cameron Staples was best for Uraidla with his six goals.

There was no Kangaroo culling in South Australia this week as Mount Barker treated their past legends while continuing its solid for 2008 by defeating Hahndorf by 22 points at home.

The Mount Barker 1983 A and B Grade premiership sides held their 25th Anniversary celebrations and were treated to a great contest by their boys of today.  Tim Barnett was best on ground for the Roos, while Matt Cooper showed some solid form for Hahndorf.

Round Seven looks a rip-snorter of a round promising to deliver some close contests. Mt Lofty host Mt. Barker this week, while Hahndorf will look to get back on the winner’s list against Ironbank, while the Thunderers will look to leap frog Onkaparinga Valley on the ladder. Birdwood host Bridgewater. Onkaparinga Valley host Blackwood in the battle of the leading goal kickers for the league. Uraidla will face off with Lobethal.

Battle of the leading goal kickers looms by Duane Schultz

Onkaparinga Valley secured their third successive win with an 82-point win over Lobethal. But strangely the result wasn’t as clear-cut as the final score suggested. Lobethal’s inaccuracy was their worst enemy as they forfeited a chance to have Onkaparinga Valley on the ropes heading into the first change. It was a five point lead to Lobethal at quarter-time, but the Tigers had five more scoring shots than the Bulldogs. But the Bulldogs, after a slow start, got their act together in the remaining three quarters, especially the third, nailing nine majors, while Lobethal could only watch on as they failed to kick a goal. After a promising start the Tigers only managed one more goal after quarter time dispelling any chance of an upset victory.

Onkaparinga Valley coach Shane Collins said his team did just ‘enough’ to win by 15 goals.

He said he was a little disappointed with the performance on the weekend but was content with his team’s form in the past three weeks.

‘Our form has been good, but we seemed a little flat against Lobethal and full credit to them’ Collins said. ‘They (Lobethal) really tried hard and put us under a lot of pressure throughout the day’ he said.

Josh Contin continued his solid form of late and David Wescombe heads the goal kicking leader board with a total of 29 majors for the season. Karl Deer was best-a-field and a shining light for the Tigers. Onkaparinga Valley needs to be switched on from the start if they are to secure a fourth successive win against Blackwood this week.

They will have to do it with the untimely injuries to stars Nick Smart and Steve Tanner.

Blackwood is back on the winner’s list after defeating Birdwood by 84 points. But in what seems a tale of the sixth round it was relatively close at quarter time with Blackwood up by just five points over a determined Birdwood. The Roosters turned the ball over with some poor decision making and insufficient disposal and let Blackwood run supreme in the subsequent three-quarters. Blackwood’s run and their ability to hunt in waves left Birdwood too far away from the ball to make any impact on the scoreboard.  Blackwood’s smaller brigade in Troy Edwards and Ben Badenoch ran rampant picking up easy, uncontested possessions. Blackwood kicked on in the second quarter with six majors and never looked back after a slow start while Birdwood failed to struggle the scorers in the second quarter. The Roosters provided some fight in the third-quarter but it was too late as the classier Blackwood outfit did as they pleased. Birdwood coach Trevor Jenkin acknowledged Blackwood were the better side but said his team was capable of playing good footy, if only in patches, and his side needs to show that for the whole game.

‘We are our own worst enemy’ he said. ‘…to watch us make basic mistakes and not chase is so frustrating’ he said.

Blackwood’s Josh Sidebottom dominated the centre as he made it his own with a 40 plus possession game.  Paul Lowe was amongst the best for Birdwood along with David Bradbrook and Daniel Smith. Aaron Roche was potent for Blackwood, kicking nine goals and earning best-on-ground honours for his side. It looks as if a showdown between the leading goal kickers in the competition will add spice to the clash between third placed Blackwood and the fifth placed Bulldogs with Onkaparinga’s David Wescombe leading Aaron Roche by three goals.  The midfield grunt of both sides will be the determining factor in providing which forward gets more supply.

Round Five Round-up by Duane Schulz

Round five is now completed with Birdwood finally getting on the winner’s list and Mt. Lofty ending Blackwood’s undefeated run.

Birdwood tasted victory for the very first time in the Central Division when they accounted for Lobethal by 34 points.

Under lights on Saturday night, the Mountain Devils of Mount Lofty disposed of the inform Blackwood at home by 33 points in very foggy conditions. It was a close first quarter and the Annual Player’s Reunion produced a great turnout to the game.  But the Mountain Devils were too good for the big improvers from Blackwood, rendering them scoreless in the last quarter, largely due to the efforts of Centre Half Back Mark Neilsen. Blackwood’s Aaron Roche tried to keep his side in contention with five goals, but bad delivery in to the forward fifty and the harder work rate of the Mountain Devils sealed the ‘Woods fate.

A familiar face returned to the field for the Mount Lofty side after a stint in metropolitan Adelaide and he was a very welcome inclusion for his side.

Ben Gordon returned after leaving for Athelstone at the end of the 2007 season, but any ill-feeling may be forgotten as he starred in the last quarter, kicking three goals, finishing with four for the game. Brad Burch was best-a-field for Mt.Lofty, continuing his solid start to the season. Blackwood now slip to second on the ladder, but that means as much as your pen licence in primary school at this point of the season.

In other Hills Central Division action Hahndorf produced the biggest win of the round by defeating Bridgwater by 105 points. Tregus kicked six for Hahndorf and Cooper was best on ground.

Mount Barker continued their strong form and accounted for Ironbank comfortably, defeating them by 52 points, 21.14 (140) to 13.10 (88). Co-Captain Clint Rogers continued his great season for the Roos.

Onkaparinga Valley made it two-in-a-row, defeating Uraidla by 18 points. Uraidla have now dropped the last two games after last week’s heart wrenching loss to Mt.Barker by 1 point.

The Bulldogs came out with all guns blazing, leading in the first quarter, but the hard working Uraidla kept coming back at them and got their game together in the second quarter.

The intensity lifted from both sides and it became a tussle.

Both sides then suffered a number of injuries and were forced to play with 19 men in the last quarter. Here the Bulldogs seemed to have more left in the tank, winning by three goals at the final siren.

Onkaparinga Valley proved potent in the forward line again this week with Chris Shee kicking four goals and David Wescombe kicking another six goals to sit on top of the leading goal kickers list.

The Bulldogs really controlled the midfield and were helped by Uraidla injuries, Jarrad Smith, Josh Contin, and Nick Smart played well.

Uraidla lost Marcus Anderson to what seemed to be a serious knee injury and Wade McLean to a hamstring strain affecting their midfield potency.

Onkaparinga Valley lost their captain in Stephen Tanner to a hamstring injury and Brad Dubois was rushed to hospital with a suspected split lung after a first quarter contest.

Bulldogs Coach Shane Collins said he was really happy to beat Uraidla at Uraidla.

‘It’s something the club hasn’t done for a number of years and the win really has put us back in to the competition now’ he said.

Collins said despite Uraidla losing the past two games, they are still full of class players, with a lot of experience, and they will certainly bounce back.

Two desperate teams wanting to win    by Duane Schultz

Birdwood finally got over its Central Division hoodoo in perfect conditions by downing Lobethal by 34 points. The first quarter showed both teams were desperate for a win as their over eagerness at the ball resulted in lots of mistakes, but the coaches wouldn’t have minded seeing this as both teams were equally determined to taste victory after being trounced in the first four rounds by other teams. Birdwood drew first blood courtesy of some soccer-like brilliance from Peter Sanders.

But Lobethal seemed to be on top early courtesy of Sam Schroder and Adam Rawlings whose run through the midfield was classy and it looked like the Tigers would lead at the first break.

The Tigers worked hard both ways and cashed in on Birdwood’s early nerves. But good run from the Roosters defence and a great mark and goal by Greg Hanton gave the Roosters a slender lead.

In the second quarter Daniel Higgins, who finished with six majors, threatened to blow the game apart with his dominance up forward.

The Tigers played smart footy and waited for mistakes from their opponents, which the cashed in on in the way of their wingman and midfielders sitting back behind the play. But Birdwood began to run and use the open spaces and their midfield pressure in-close from the likes of Simon Longman and Dave Bradbrook released best-on-ground Paul Lowe and Scott Friend to get the ball up forward.

Their improved skill level in hitting targets left Lobethal no method of getting the ball and this allowed Birdwood to claw their way back to go into the main break just two-points behind.

The ‘premiership quarter’ was a testament to the desperate Roosters, who blew the game open by blasting six goals to Lobethal’s solitary major. Shane Carmen was on top at the stoppages and Lobethal were caught chasing Rooster’s guernsey’s for the rest of the quarter. The backline did a great job and gave lots of drive through the centre.

The Rooster’s forward line pressure was second-to-none and Lobethal struggled to get the drive from the defence. Mundy and Bubner began to use their pace and skill and had a real impact as small forwards. But the midfield was the key to the day and Bradbrook, Longman and Lowe were fantastic.

One thought the Rooster’s were home and maybe a bit of complacency kicked in as the Tigers came out after the three-quarter time huddle to dominate the first 15-minutes of the final term, winning the stoppages and controlling the play.

Before Birdwood knew what was happening, the Tigers had clawed back within three goals and Higgins had slotted his sixth major for the match.

But, Birdwood dug deep and the work of Lowe to force it forward and a goal by big man Shane Carmen ended any Lobethal upset.

Roosters Senior Coach Trevor Jenkin said it was a great win for the club.

This one means a lot for club desperate to be on the winners list

Duane Schultz

The Central Division has not been a happy hunting ground for the Birdwood Roosters since it crossed over from the Country Division at the end of the 2006 season.

With a proud history going back as far as 1921 and with a great record of six premierships in the lower tier competition, the Roosters crossed into unfamiliar territory where they’ve copped their fair share of criticism around the Hills footy community.

Until now the Roosters had not registered a single victory since its inception into the Central Division.

The last time Birdwood tasted success was round 14, way back in July 2006, just to put things into perspective, the last time Birdwood sang their song was around the time;

American Baseballer Barry Bonds was first investigated for performance enhancing drugs, North Melbourne played their final home match at Manuka Oval, Scott Welsh was playing for West Adelaide in the SANFL after being overlooked by the Crows (he scored six goals) and Shane Warne’s biography revealed he had affairs with up to 1000 women.

‘Hips don’t lie’ by Shakira was the number one song on the Australian music charts, Melbourne had hosted the 2006 Commonwealth Games two months earlier and the FIFA World cup was into its finals matches.

So the win at the weekend over an equally desperate Lobethal meant a lot for the proud club.

Round Five was Rivalry Round for the League and ecstatic Birdwood Senior Coach, Trevor Jenkin, said ‘the atmosphere and a big crowd made the day for two teams desperate for a win’.

Since crossing over from the Country Division he said ‘It was a huge incentive and challenge to win in the Central Division… and the boys loved it…they have taken a fair bit of stick since moving up’.

‘It was fantastic to see’ he said.

By all accounts the Birdwood club rooms were pumping until the early hours of Sunday morning with the whole community celebrating the win.

For a team as desperate and as proud as the Roosters it would have been great to be there, but on another note there is always a loser and one must feel for the struggling Lobethal.

They too are a proud club with back-to-back premierships in 1998 and 1999, with their last in 2002 under Darren Sziller, a former player and best and fairest winner at the club.

Jenkin said Lobethal were in the same position as Birdwood before the toss of the coin and both teams showed desperation at the footy.

He praised the efforts of Lobethal’s Daniel Higgins who tried hard all day for the Tigers finishing with six majors to his name.

Both teams were winless this year, Birdwood’s average losing margin was 113 points and Lobethal’s stood at 148 points before the weekend’s game.

Both teams were very desperate indeed.

It showed in the first three quarters of the game where the competition was fierce, with it looking like it would come down to a war of attrition, but the Rooster’s rallied and their six goals to one blitzkrieg in the premiership quarter ensured their 34 point victory.

Paul Lowe was best-a-field for Birdwood, with four goals.

His pace was a great asset to the Roosters when they blew the game open in the third quarter.

Big man Shane Carmen was exceptional at the ruck contests and his ability to dominate the ball-ups brought the smaller runners into the game.

But Jenkin said it was a good team effort and his players were rewarded for their constant commitment to the club over the past couple of years.

And it was ‘great to see’ he said.

It was a good day out in other grades at Birdwood, registering wins in all grades except the junior colts.
