CRYSTAL BROOK & ORROROO HAVE DRAW, BROUGHTON MUNDOORA STAY 4TH…….Tuesday August 21, 2007

In what could be a preview of this years Northern Areas Grand Final, the two top sides side of the competition battled out a draw at Crystal Brook.  Crystal Brook started the game well and skipped away to a 13 point lead at half time.  The League leaders Orroroo, clawed their way back in the third term, adding 3.4 to 2.2 and at the last change just a goal separated the sides, despite Orroroo having 21 scoring shots to 17.  Best players for Orroroo weer Luke Ellery and Alistair Bowman, while for homeside, Shane Arbon and Daniel Nicholson played well with Jamie Kemp kicking seven goals – he now has 96 for the season. The teams butter up again in a fortnight at Wirrabara, where they’ll meet to grab a spot in the Grand Final.

At Port Broughton, the Eagles made short work of Jamestown/Peterborough, shoring up 4th spot with a 125 point win. Aaron Barclay and Shannon Wilson were best with Kane Allen slotting home five goals – to stay in second spot on the goalkicking tally with 76. For Jamestown/Peterborough,  Ryan Simpson and Adrian McCarthy were best.

At Booleroo Centre, BMW finished the season with a win, defeating third placed Southern Eagles by points.  BMW had 33 scoring shots to 18, perhaps the margin a little flattering to the Tigers. Braden Battersby was best for BMW, while Ben Brown best for Southern Flinders, John McKenna kicked five to finish the minor round on 59 goals.

This week in commencement of the finals series at Jamestown, Southern Flinders and Broughton/Mundoora meet in the Eliminiation Finals.

BROUGHTON MUNDOORA UPSETS CRYSTAL BROOK.......Wednesday August 15, 2007

In one of the upsets of the season, Broughton Mundoora defeated League leader Crystal Brook by 47 points at Mundoora. The Eagles were helped to an extent by Crystal Brook’s poor kicking, leading at half time by 36 points – 8.2 to 1.8, but won the second half with some inaccuracy themselves kicking 5.8 to 3.9. Avan Ireland and Matthew Gale were best in the teams sixth win of the season with Shannon Wilson kicking four goals. Matthew Jackman and Andrew Wright were best for Crystal Brook, Jamie Kemp restricted to just one goal – he now has 89 for the season.

Orroroo took advantage of the loss by Crystal Brook, to grab spot after their win over BMW at Booloeroo Centre. Orroroo powered away in the opening term kicking 6.1 to 0.2 and were far too good for their opponents, with Jonathon Byerlee and Will Bennett best. BMW’s best were Zac Murphy and Sam Keller.

Southern Flinders recorded their ninth win of the season with a 19 point victory over Jamestown/Peterborough at Gladstone. Brett and Nathan Cunningham were their best, with Scott Brand and John McKenna kicking three goals each. For Jamestown/Peterborough, who have been fairly competitive in the past month, Bernard and Nick McInerney were their best.

This week is the final round in the NAFA, Crystal Brook hosts Orroroo, in the minor premiership decider. BMW has to beat South Flinders at Booleroo Centre to keep its faint finals chances alive – hoping that Jamestown/Peterborough can knock off Broughton/Mundoora at Port Broughton.

The battle continues for the minor premiership in Northern Areas, with both Crystal Brook and Orroroo both on 11 wins. Crystal Brook had a very comfortable home win over the BMW by 87 points. Jamie Kemp kicked nine goals – 88 for the season and continues to be on track for the magical ton.

Meanwhile Orroroo had to work overtime to secure the points at home against bottom side Jamestown/Peterborough. The visitors jumped the gun in the first term, gaining a near match winning lead of 33 points at the first change. They had every right to sense victory at the last change with a 19 point lead, but Orroroo did what they had to in the last term, adding 4.5 to 1.0 to secure a narrow six point win. Will Bennett (three goals) and Josh Clark were best for the victors, while for the valiant Jamestown/Peterborough, Ryan Simpson and John Arnold played well.

Despite trailing at half time, Southern Flinders proved too good for Broughton Mundoora winning by 33 points at Wirrabara. 8.7 to 4.5 in the decisive third term proved the difference, ensuring Southern Flinders their eight win of the season – their best were Matthew Woolford and Nathan Cunningham, while for the Eagles, Nick Hewett and Ben O’Donohue were best, with Kane Allen kicking three goals to move to 70 for the season.

With two rounds to play, the top three is set, with Crystal Brook and Orroroo set to play in the Major Semi, while the Elimination Final will be Southern Flinders versus either Broughton Mundoora or the improved BMW, who are both on five wins. One fancies the Eagles will keep fourth spot, as they have Crystal Brook and bottom placed Jamestown to play while BMW faces Orroroo and Southern Flinders. Broughton Mundoora also have a superior percentage while will be an advantage.

Ladder: Crystal Brook 22pts (56.06%), Orroroo 22(54.77%), Southern Flinders 16, Broughton/Mundoora 10 (51.25%) BMW 10 (42.41%), Jamestown/Peterborough 4.

UPSETS APLENTY IN ROUND ELEVEN

It was a round of upsets last Sautrday in the NAFA starting at Jamestown where the hometeam recorded it second win for the season, beating Broughton/Mundoora by 38 points. To be fair to the Jamestown/Peterborough outfit they lost their first five matches by margins of 1, 4, 11, 2 and 3 points, so could quite easily be in the four with a bit of luck. So it was a much needed win with David Williams and Darren Woolford best, with Shane Heness and Zac Noonan slotting through three goals each. For Broughton/Mundoora Kane Allen kicked five and now has 56 for the year.

BMW ended Southern Flinders five game winning streak with a nine point win at Gladstone. Kendrick McCallum and Baden Battersby were best, with Andrew Milne kicking six goals, 24 now in the last four weeks. John McKenna was outstanding again up forward for Southern Flinders, with eight goals.

At Orroroo, Crystal Brook were too good for the homeside, winning by 20 points. James Wardle and David Jeffries were best with Jamie Kemp kicking four to have 60 for the season. Andrew Byerlee and Keith Slade were best, both teams are now on eight wins each at the top of the NAFA ladder.

The NAFA has a week off, due to the State Country Championships.

Round Ten........WINS FOR THE TOP THREE SIDES.....Tuesday July 3, 2007

In another interesting round of the NAFA, the were wins for Crystal Brook, Orroroo and Southern Flinders, just about settling the top three, the order though is far from finalised.

Orroroo maintained its one game advantage at the top of the ladder with a two point win over BMW. Orroroo held a 21 point lead at half time, before BMW came back in the third term adding 6.3 to 3.1, the margin at the last change just a point in a favour of the home team. In a tight last quarter, Orroroo did enough, scraping home by two points. Their best were Jonathon Byerlee and Will Bennett, while for BMW Jordon Arthur (five goals) and Braden Battersby played well, with coach  Andrew Milne kicking five goals.

Crystal Brook returned to form and stay in second spot after a 19 point win at home against Broughton/Mundoora. The Eagles skipped away to a four goal lead at half time, but the Brookies exploded in the third term, adding eight goals to three to regain the lead. With 3.7 to 2.3 the homeside did enough to get the win, with Jason Cousins and Matthew Jackman in the best, along with Jamie Kemp who kicked six goals, he now has 56 for the season. For the Eagles, Ben O’Donohue was best with Matthew Gale kicking six goals.

At Peterborough, Southern Flinders were too good, winning by 52 points. Craig Ottoway and Ryan Simpson were best for the homeside, while for Southern Flinders, Scott Brand played well and did forward John McKenna who kicked eight goals.

This week in Round Eleven, Jamestown/Peterborough play Broughton Mundoora at Jamestown, Orroroo and BMW meet while Southern Flinders hosts BMW at Gladstone.

BMW UPSETS CRYSTAL BROOK….Monday June 24, 2007

BMW caused a big upset in Round Nine by defeating Crystal Brook at Melrose. In a tight game all day, BMW did  enough in the last term (3.6 to 2.2) to get over the line by 16 points. Andrew Milne was in fine form again, kicking five goals, after his eight goal haul the week before against Broughton/Mundoora. Zac Murphy and Chris Sanders played well in just BMW’s third win of the year. For Crystal Brook, Andrew Wright and Shane Arbon were best with Jamie Kemp kicking two goals to take his season’s tally to 50.

At Port Broughton, it was a high scoring affair with South Flinders having a win by 11 points. John McKenna (eight goals) was in fine form up forward, as was Brett Ballantyne who kicked five. Shannon Wilson at the other end kicked six, with Ben O’Donohue playing well also.

At Orroroo, it was one way traffic for the League leader, winning by 87 points over Jamestown/Peterborough. Lachy Bowman slotted through nine goals.

So at the end of Round Nine, Orroroo (14) is one game clear of Crystal Brook and Southern Flinders (both 12) with Broughton/Mundoora (8) and BMW (6) set to fight out for 4th spot. This week Crystal Brook hosts Broughton/Mundoora, Orroroo and BMW meet at Orroroo, while at Peterborough, Jamestown/Peterborough will try and break Southern Flinders four game winning streak.

Round Eight - SOUTHERN FLINDERS UPSETS ORROROO…….Monday June 18, 2007

For the second week running, Southern Flinders caused an upset of sorts with a three point victory over Orroroo at Laura. In a game where little separated the sides all day, Scott Brand and Cam Edson were best for the winners, while for the League leaders, John Nicholas and Josh Clark played well. Lachlan Bowman kicked four for Orroroo to take his season’s tally to 27.

From a purists point of view, the rest of the games in the round weren’t so close. At Crystal Brook, the homeside were too good for Jamestown/Peterborough by 79 points.  Luke Kapitola was best for Crystal Brook with Jamie Kemp kicking nine goals, he has 48 goals for the season.

Despite eight goals from Andrew Milne, BMW were well beaten by Broughton/Mundoora to the tune of 73 points. The BMW coach must pick his own best players because he didn’t rate a mention, while for the Eagles, Matthew Gale kicked five goals, with Justin Tiller named best.

This week, Broughton/Mundoora meets South Flinders at Port Broughton, Orroroo hosts Jamestown/Peterborough, while BMW plays Crystal Brook at Melrose.
