REX FOSTER REACHES 350 SENIOR  GAMES

Rex Foster 350 games of Senior Football for United and Wudinna United

 Career:

Began playing senior Football with his first A grade Game on the 15th June 1974, ironically almost 34 years to the day to his 350th today 14th June 2008.  During this year, 1974, Rex was still playing colts football and played the first two of his 350 senior games.

On this day United played Warramboo at Yaninee and lost 18-14 (122) to 13-12 (90).

Other players playing A grade for United on this day included Jeb Alsop, Ken & Bob Barns, Charlie Edmonds, Robert Fraser, Alan McGuire, John, Dean & Graeme Oswald, Tim & Kingsley Scholz and Barry Wilkins

Rex played 116 A grade games and 7 B Grade games for the United club prior to its amalgamation with Wudinna and then continued to play B Grade until the present day culminating in this achievement of 350 games.  He holds the club record for the most number of B grade games and is second only to Mark Bubner on the clubs all time games record and like Marks record is unlikely to be surpassed for some time, if ever.

Rex missed almost 4 years of football in his prime through the 1980’s because of family and work commitments which, if he had played during those years, he would probably have eclipsed Marks record by now.

We believe that no player involved in our club has played football over as many years as Rex has and few anywhere have had the pleasure (or pain) of playing for over 30 seasons of senior football.

To put this into perspective, none of today’s A Grade team were born when Rex played his first game, and only a handful of “old buggers” in the B Grade were around at that time.

Also in 1974 Australia’s population was 13.5 million (approx ), Cyclone Tracey hit Darwin, John Howard entered Parliament as member for Bennelong, Gough Whitlam was Prime Minister, Don Dunstan Premier of SA, Bankcard was introduced, Countdown was first aired, Think Big won the Melbourne Cup and Richmond won the VFL flag.

Rex still is making important contributions to our B grade each week and is consistently in the best players at over 50 years of age.

Other career achievements include 1977 United A Grade Best Utility, 1997 B Grade Best & Fairest, 2007 B Grade Best & Fairest Runner Up, 1992, 2001 & 2006 B Grade Most Consistent, 2005 B Grade Coaches Trophy, 1998 B Grade Best Team Man.

In 2008 Rex has been honoured with the B Grade Captaincy.

Over all the years Rex has played he has only achieved the games ultimate, a Premiership, once, with Wudinna United B Grade in 1991.

Congratulations Rex, hope you enjoy and savour this achievement as not many footballers anywhere will get to experience and we sincerely hope you are still around and playing for a bit longer yet.
