At Johnstone Park, Ramblers overcame its hurdle of underachieving to claim the minor premiership with a 71 point demolition of cross town rival, Imperials. With heavy rain falling during the Reserves match, the ground was heavily saturated making conditions tough for both sides. The first quarter saw the dominance of Ramblers on full show as Imperials were held to just a solitary point. Ramblers Clint Girardi was a man possessed in the first term as his three goals established a small break early on. By the first change, Ramblers had built a 27 point lead and it did not stop their as they continued the misery for the Blues. Two more goals without reply had the margin out past six goals and when Ben Dougall cleverly assisted Patrick O’Neil for his first goal, the match already seemed out of reach for Imperials. It was not until 3:18 pm until Imperials kicked their first, through the boot of Josh Charles but at half time the lead was out to 50 points. With Imperials losing to Martin Baillee at the start of the second half, undisciplined play crept into the Blues as their frustration was clearly evident. This did not hinder Ramblers at all as again they extended their margin to nine goals at three quarter time. The final quarter saw Ramblers steam roll Imperials with a five goal to one term that would please coach Anthony Weyland. By the final siren, it was clear that Ramblers had asserted themselves as genuine premiership contenders whilst Imperials needs to regain some of its early season form or else look like pretenders.
At Mannum, not even the celebration of Trevor Rigney’s centenary of goals could stop the home side accounting for Jervois with the Roos winning by 21 points. The opening quarter was evenly fought with both sides not giving any space to their opponents. Coming into the match needing five goals, Rigney started on fire as he booted his side’s first five goals to bring up the ton. With things looking bad for Mannum, coach Lee Adams made a bold move with Andrew Warnest being put on Rigney for the rest of the game. This cruicial move ended up being the turning point of the game as for the rest of the game, Rigney was held to just one goal. For the first three quarters, Jervois were able to keep their noses in front as their intensity at the ball was forcing Mannum to make pressured errors. Mannum were able to tie the game at three quarter time and from then on ran away with the match with a seven goal to three final term. The win guarantees Mannum a spot in the finals whilst Jervois’ position in second has become more vulnerable and if they are defeated by Imperials in the final game, the Bluds will slip to third. Best for Mannum was Ben Lambert, Brad Wakefield and Todd Boughen who finished with four goals. For Jervois, their best were Jason Bayliss, Zac Ewer and James Cobbledick.
In a good team effort the Mypolonga Tigers easily accounted for Tailem Bend, winning by 88 points. The first half started well for Mypolonga as in each quarter they booted six goals whilst restricting the ball use of the Eagles. As throughout the year, Mypolonga’s three Pedler brothers all stood up with George and Joe maintained their sides considerable lead. Tailem Bend’s effort could not be questioned but being able to only kick three goals in the first half, makes the situation a lot more difficult for any side in the competition. After trailing by 29 and then 59 points at the first two changes, Tailem worked its way back into the match. This could have easily been avoided but Mypolonga’s effort in front of goals cost them a bigger margin heading into the final change. The final term saw Mypolonga come out on top as Brad Martin booted his fifth goal of the game and effectively put the game far beyond reach. It was their final hit out for the year and Matt Dent and his Eagles know that they made big improvements late in the season and that next year is a far more promising year. For Mypolonga, this win gives them fourth spot and next weeks game against Ramblers should show the Tigers how deep they could head into the finals. Best for Mypolonga was Joe Pedler at centre half back, Daniel Wallfried and George Pedler whilst Tailem’s best was Tony Lynch, Michael Vickers and ruckman Patrick Gabb.

IMPERIALS LOSE TWO ON THE TROT By Brendan Shakes
Imperials continue to stutter towards the 2008 Finals series after suffering the second loss on the trot to a lower side, going down to Mannum by nine points. Imperials have hit a rough patch and this has now dented their run of playing deep into the major round. Mannum began the game well with Ben Lambert goaling early but Imperials Matthew Kowald then responded with three goals in a row. The Blues attack was then turned into a Mannum surge with three late goals to restore a seven point lead at quarter time. The second term was similar to the first with Mannum able to outscore their more fancied opponents. Kowald was proving a handful up forward as he had four goals to half time whilst the Mannum midfield was beginning to be more damaging with the football. The third quarter saw Imperials come out firing as they doubled their score to stun the home side. Imperials were making all the running with Ash Temby, Matt Gogel and Jason Puatti providing plenty of opportunities for their forwards. A seven goal term saw Imperials now turn that 15 point half time deficit to a nine point lead to now turn the game on its head. With their backs against the wall, Mannum showed some spirit as they came out with a five goal final term. All of their goals came in a row as Imperials had no answer the Roos barrage with Mannum working harder off the football.
Their day was typified as a strong tackle from behind by Todd Boughen helped give him his third goal but more importantly extend their margin. Best for Mannum was Brad Wakefield, Ben Lambert and Justin Maloney with Imperials best being Gogel, Temby and Ryan Eyre.
In Murray Bridge, Ramblers asserted themselves as the frontrunners for 2009 with a comprehensive 36 point victory over Jervois. In-form forward Trevor Rigney was sent to the middle for the start of the game as both sides were vying for top spot. Ramblers were able to score the first goal of the game with Liam O’Neil kicking truly. The first quarter could have been a lot more productive for Ramblers but their inaccuracy in front of goals meant their lead was only nine points by the first change. Jervois began the second term on fire with Trevor Rigney being moved to full forward and the move paid off early with Rigney snapping his second goal of the game. Both teams were playing football with a finals atmosphere as the ball moved at a frenetic pace. With a four goal lead at half time, Ramblers got on the attack early as Adam Jackson booted his third to extend the lead. Bluds Sam Mahony was shut out of the game with his opponent Greg Stevens keeping the playing coach quiet. The final quarter saw Jervois come out to win the game but Ramblers were up to the challenge as the Roosters flexed their muscles on the eve of the finals. Three late goals to Jervois reduced the margin but the game was already done and dusted as Ramblers were resting their star players. Best for Ramblers was Mark Marchetti, Troy Cowland and Stevens with Jervois’ better players being Reid Beeching, Jason Bayliss and Ty Burkett.
Tailem Bend continued the misery for the winless Meningie as the Eagles ran away with a 41 point victory to keep their chances of playing finals. The home side started well as Phil O’Connell booting the first goal for the Eagles and when Anthony Gregurke goaled, the margin was out to two goals. Meningie were unable to contain Eagle midfielders Damien Raidis and Dylan Hogarth who also register majors as their side shot out to a 38 point lead at quarter time. From then on Meningie were able to match the Eagles but the first quarter had made the task much harder. By half time, the lead was out to an even eight goals as Hogarth and Raidis were running riot around the grounds and Wayne Luckett was proving a handful up forward. Meningie were able to gain some respectability as they outscored Tailem in the second half however any revival was already out of reach. With the lead reduced to 37 points, Tailem came out to win the quarter and show their supporters a glimpse of hope and accomplished this with their younger players in Hogarth, Jason Schultz and James Little. Best for Tailem Bend was Raidis, Hogarth and Tony Lynch whilst Meningie’s best was Jack Lewis, Tim Saddlier and Chris Lawson.

ROOS FINISH STRONG OVER EAGLES By Brendan Shakes
At Tailem Bend, Mannum accounted for the Eagles with a strong four quarter effort to win by 49 points. Mannum won the toss and elected to kick with the breeze and started well with a five goal quarter. Their midfielders were finding plenty of the football and responded to the early Eagle attack with Josh Gould, Jarrod Woodward and Ben Quinn scoring late goals to have a 14 point lead at quarter time. The second term was free flowing with eleven goals scored for the quarter. Even with the breeze, Tailem were not able to win the quarter with Mannum’s Matt Connolly holding down the fort in defence. With a 21 point lead at half time, Mannum continued on with the attacking football as quick goals from Gould and Andrew Warnest helped extend the lead to eight goals. Midway through the term, Tailem was able to reduce the margin with four successive goals but with a quarter remaining, the Eagles still trailed by 29 points. The final term saw the defence of Mannum hold strong with Tailem’s only goal coming from the boot of Brad Bell. Best for Mannum was Matt Connolly, Paul Sarno and Ben Lambert whilst Tailem’s best was Michael Vickers, Todd Downs and Patrick Gabb.
In wintry conditions, Mypolonga broke a three-and-a-half year drought against Imperials with a spirited 31 point victory. Imperials won the toss and elected to kick with the breeze but their advantage was not as decisive as constant rain began to fall making the ground slippery. With both sides having to resort to a brand of wet weather football, Imperials were able to put through a much needed goal with Tom Hines scoring his first. Tigers James Pedler was dominating early in the first term as his work around the ground was keeping his side in touch. Both teams went goal for goal with Mypolonga’s Caine Lynn leveling the scores after multiple fifty metre penalties to give his side a sniff heading into the second term. What was to happen next was something remarkable and that will put Jervois and Ramblers on notice as Mypolonga smashed the Blues with a six goal to one quarter. Mypolonga’s dominance was overwhelming as the home crowd and its home players were in shock as the Tigers penetrated their forward line with ease. Two goals from Mypolonga’s Cameron Wells helped extend his sides lead and when Caine Lynn ran into an open goal the Tigers were out to a seven goal lead.
Imperials did start the second half well with Daniel Girdham and Martin Baillee goaling early to reduce the margin but the Tigers were able steady with three goals of their own, to all but rule any chance of an Imperial revival. The final quarter was as dull as Imperials day as home supporters started to leave early to beat the traffic. As the final siren sounded, Mypolonga showed in a dominant display that this season will not be a three horse race.
In Murray Bridge, it was top versus bottom with Ramblers smashing the winless Meningie by 139 points. Even without Luke Button and Ryan Morris who were away on state duties, the Roosters continued on with the annihilation as they started with a five goal to one opening term. Ramblers Clint Girardi was in the action as his three early goals gave his side a 22 point lead at quarter time. The second term saw Meningie unable to register a goal with Ramblers then proceeding with 8.7 to all but wrap up the match. The in form forward line of Ramblers all clicked with crumbers, Ben Dougall and Liam O’Neil making life difficult for the Meningie defence. Trailing by 74 points at half time, Meningie came out on the attack with an early goal but that was quickly cancelled out when Sam Pfeiffer booted his first. Another five goal term helped Ramblers push their lead to 15 goals and for the Bears; the home side did not take its foot of the pedal. Eight goals to one saw Ramblers finish with a big 23 goal lead and give them a healthy percentage heading into the final three games of the season. Best for Ramblers was Tyson Matthews and Daniel Zadow in defence as well as Patrick O’Neil who also kicked four goals whilst for Meningie; their best were Tim Saddlier, Aiden Barker and Paul Reichelt.

The home crowd at Jervois was treated to a spectacle as Trevor Rigney continued his white-hot form with a 13 goal effort to put away Mypolonga by 27 points. Both teams started the game playing a fierce, finals brand of football with Rigney booting the first goal of the game. Rigney was able to boot two more goals for the quarter as his side opened up an early 20 point lead at the first break. Mypolonga responded to three early goals by Rigney as they put on scoreboard pressure through youngsters, Kieran Jaensch and Paul Anastasiou to reduce the lead to 25 points at half time. With six goals at half time, the man of the moment continued on his precession as no-one from the Mypolonga defence could contain him. The third term saw both teams go for broke as Mypolonga tried to cut the deficit whilst Jervois went out to put the game beyond doubt. Jervois was able to deliver a game winning quarter as their eight goal to five term set up a 45 point lead at three quarter time. The top two leading goal kickers were involved in the game but only one was making his presence felt and that was Rigney. Another six goals pushed his tally up to 12 whilst Tigers forward Brad Martin had been held goal less.
With a quarter remaining, Mypolonga played the game out until the end and were able to reduce the margin at the final siren. Best on ground was clearly Rigney but had handy contributions from Reid Beeching and Russell Jarvis. Mypolonga’s captain James Pedler played his heart out and other players named in the Tigers best were Mark Oborn and Nathan Creaser.
Ramblers maintained its push for top spot with a comfortable ten goal victory over Tailem Bend. With Tailem winning the toss, the home side kicked with a strong breeze and began well with an early goal to Wayne Luckett. Even with the breeze in their face, the running capacity of Ramblers was proving the difference in the sides as the Liam and Patrick O’Neil were giving good supply to their forwards. Ramblers Ryan Morris was proving a handful and by quarter time had three goals as his side held a 23 point lead at the first change. The second quarter saw Tailem try to restrict the amount of scoring of their opponents but was unable to as Morris put through his fourth to help his side extend its lead to 38 points at half time. Coming out after the main break, Ramblers got on the attack early with Clint Girardi putting the game out of the Eagles reach with his early goal. Two goals by the Eagles’ Anthony Gregurke and Michael Thomas had given their side a glimmer of hope but late goals to Ramblers made the margin 48 points at the final change. The final quarter saw Tailem give it their all but their inaccuracy in front of goals did not help their cause as Ramblers came out easy winners. Best for Ramblers was the O’Neil brothers and Troy Cowland whilst for the Eagles, Mitchell Vickers, Dylan Hogarth and Damien Raidis all had solid games.
At Johnstone Park, in wintry conditions, the engine room of Imperials overcame a spirited Meningie outfit, winning by 62 points. Imperials were kicking with a slight breeze and booted the first two goals of the game through Luke Harrowfield and Henry Hodge. From their early attacks, Meningie were finally rewarded when Brodie Van Den Brink kicked truly. The ruck work of Josh Charles in the opening quarter was instrumental as the midfield group of Ash Temby, Daniel Girdham and Hodge continually penetrated their forward line. After a stint in the reserves, Imperials Martin Baillee found some of the footy as he booted three goals for the quarter to set up a 44 point lead at quarter time. Supporters of both sides would have expected Imperials to continue the onslaught but Meningie came out with intent and to give their opponents a run for there money. Two goals from Richard Prusa and Mark Turner helped reduce the margin for the Bears but their dominance of the quarter was not resulting in reducing the margin. A late goal from Michael Sumner helped his side kick their first goal for the quarter and give them a 42 point lead at the main break. Meningie’s Aiden Barker played a great third term as he kicked all of his team’s three goals and took a big hanger to give the visitors a bit of hope. Trailing by five goals and having the small breeze at their back, Barker’s fourth reduced the margin to under four goals and started to get the home crowd a little restless. In the end, Imperials finally started to play the same kind of football they played in the first term as they kicked six unanswered goals to all but wrap up the match. Best for Imperials was Girdham, Jason Puiatti and Temby whilst Meningie’s better players were Barker, Turner and Evan Smith.

In what is one of the biggest upsets of the season, Tailem Bend held off a last quarter fight back from Mypolonga to win by 13 points. After winning the toss, the Eagles opening term was promising as both their defence and offence clicked with the Tigers only score being a solitary point. Trailing by 13 points at quarter time, Mypolonga went out to build a big lead but their inaccuracy cost them the chance. The strong wind was making the task harder for the Eagles as Mypolonga continually penetrated their fifty but their forwards could not put it on the scoreboard as they trailed by three points at the main break. After kicking two goals in the first half, the Eagles booted four goals in the third term in what ended up being the difference at the end. A magnificent running goal from James little helped his side to extend their lead to 29 points but Mypolonga would have the breeze at their back. Kicking with the wind, Mypolonga stepped up the pressure but the defence of Tailem Bend was holding strong. The leagues leading goal kicker, Mypolonga’s Brad Martin, had been shut down all day by Matthew Linke but eventually kicked his first goal midway through the final quarter. The Eagles had being playing patches of good football for several weeks but this week everything fell into place as now Tailem is a chance of playing finals football.
At Meningie, Trevor Rigney and his Jervois team mates thrashed the Bears, winning by a huge 168 points. J ervois got off to a good start with Zac Ewer booting an early goal but it was quickly cancelled out by Meningie’s Evan Smith. Trevor Rigney was on fire in the first term as he booted five of Jervois’ eight goals and by the end of the first term, his side was out to a six goal lead. The second term saw Jervois slam home nine goals whilst keeping their opponents goalless. Rigney was enjoying his day out as he kicked another four goals for the term, to give him nine goals in the first half. With a 90 point lead at half time, Jervois continued its dominance of the game with another nine goal term. Jervois’ Reid Beeching and Ben Woodhouse joined Rigney with the precession as each kicked two goals with Rigney booting three. The final term saw Jervois make it over the 200 point barrier as Rigney had a quiet quarter with only two goals to give him 14 for the match. By the end of the match, Jervois had nine goal kickers with Rigney being the clear standout. Best for Jervois were Ewer, Rigney and Jamie Lyon whilst Meningie’s best were Smith, Greg Saddlier and Tim Saddlier.
At Mannum, visiting side Imperials kept up its pressure for top spot with a 78 point victory. Mannum started the game well with Matt Connolly taking two strong grabs and giving his side an early two goal lead. This was as far as Mannum would go with the Roos only kicking 1.3 for the rest of the match. Imperials were the dominant side for the entire match as they extended their margin at every break. Imperials Shaun Clayson was given the job of shutting down Ben Quinn and succeeded with the influential player being restricted for four quarters. Imperials midfielders such as Ash Temby, Daniel Girdham and Ryan Eyre were given space on the big Mannum oval and gave their forwards plenty of opportunities. Michael Sumner was the lead goal scorer with four goals with Eyre booting three.
Best for Imperials were Girdham, Matthew Gogel and Clayson whilst Mannum’s best were Justin Maloney, Josh Gould and Ben Lambert.

Eight goals from Mypolonga’s Brad Martin have helped his side easily overcome Meningie, with the Tigers winning by 83 points. Playing down at Meningie, the Tigers played a solid first quarter as they were able to restrict the home side to just a Josh Rigney goal. Tigers’ Joe Pedler was proving to be the problem for the Bears as his rebound was a continual dilemma throughout the game. With a four goal lead at the first break, Mypolonga continued to step up the pressure as Meningie had no answers to the dominance of the Tigers. The margin could have been a lot more if it weren’t for the inaccuracy of Mypolonga but three unanswered goals by Nathan Creaser, David Wallfried and Martin helped extend the margin to 53 points at half time. The third quarter saw Meningie try to come back in the match as neither side could get on top of their opponents. Martin was the only goal scorer for the Tigers but with his tally up to six, it was clear that he was proving to be the difference between the sides. The final quarter saw Meningie kick their second goal of the game with Rigney slotting home his second. Caine Lynn and Kieran Jaensch aided Martin in the final term as their side showed the competition that they are still a side to be wary of. Best for Mypolonga was Joe Pedler, Mark Oborn and Martin whilst Meningie’s best was Evan Smith, Tim Saddlier and Robert Payne.
At Jervois, the home side survived a late scare to defeat Tailem Bend by 10 points and retain the Lokan Cup. The Bluds started the game well with Ben Woodhouse and Trevor Rigney booting early goals for the home side. In what was a shootout in the first quarter, both teams played strong running football with Russell Jarvis booting two goals as did Tailem’s Dylan Hogarth. Only trailing by three goals at quarter time, the Eagles booted two early goals to reduce the margin. Jervois’ Matt Brion was able to inspire his team out of its slumber as it booted another three unanswered goals to lead at half time by 28 points. The third quarter was a tighter affair a Tailem continued to stay with the reigning premiers. Eagles’ Daniel Gregory was able to get on the scoreboard and when Kenny Sumner kicked his first their side had kept the margin under six goals and making the first few minutes of the final term quite interesting. After kicking eight goals in three quarters, Rigney was shut out of the game as Tailem Bend came storming back into the game. Three quick goals by the Eagles in the first ten minutes halved the margin as Jervois was stunned by the resurgence. The margin got down to ten points but when Bluds debutant Tyler Robinson goaled, the margin was out to 16 points and was effectively the sealer.
Best for Jervois was Jarvis, Rigney and Jim Lyon whilst Tailem’s best was Tony Lynch, Hogarth and Damien Raidis.

Imperials Ryan Eyre continued his great season with six goals as the home team inflicted Tailem’s seventh loss of the year with a 76 point victory. The opening of the match was slow as both teams adjusted to the windy conditions but Imperials were quicker to adapt as Luke Harrowfield booted his first goal of the game. Harrowfield’s first ignited Imperials into action as the Blues went on a five goal burst with Michael Sumner, who was returning from injury, snapping around the body to extend the margin.
Tailem however were able to kick a late goal with Dylan Hogarth kicking truly and at quarter time his side was down by 32 points. The second term saw Tailem come out with intent as they responded to their dismal opening quarter as they piled on six goals. Michael Thomas stole the show for the visitors as his three goals for the quarter brought his side back into the match.
After dominating the match but not putting it on the scoreboard, Imperials came out to stamp their authority on the match and did so with an eight goal quarter. Imperials midfielders were beginning to run riot as ruckman Nick Stephen gave first use to his on-ballers. Daniel Girdham was playing a great game and was rewarded with his second goal after a strong transfer of play down the scoreboard wing. Eyre was also finding plenty of the ball as his silky skills gave him three goals for the quarter.
At three quarter time Imperials had kicked away and were leading by 59 points and had the game all but wrapped up. To the credit of Tailem they never threw in the towel as they stayed with Imperials for most of the last quarter. Eyre and Girdham’s second half were the game breakers as both kicked early goals to extend the lead to 12 goals. Two late consolation goals by Thomas gave him five for the match but as the sun went down and the game drew to a close Eyre dazzled again to kick home his sixth for the match.
The match between Jervois and Mannum was a hard slog for both teams but not for Trevor Rigney as his seven goals proved to be the difference in his sides 15 point win. Kicking with a small breeze in the first term, Jervois got off to the perfect start with Ben Woodhouse and James Cobbledick scoring early goals. The high intensity of the match made it hard for both teams to get on top of each other as scoring became more and more difficult. Mannum had reduced the margin late in the quarter but a late Rigney goal gave the Bluds a seven point lead at the first break. The second quarter was in contrast to the first as goals came freely for both sides with Mannum piling on five. Rigney was again causing havoc as he booted for goals for the quarter to give five for the half. For Mannum, ruckman Brad Wakefield was the dominant player in the midfield as his work around the ground helped his side to a four point lead at half time.
The third term was a scrappy affair with highlights from Wakefield and Rigney keeping the crowd entertained. A goal on the three quarter time siren gave Jervois the lead back to the Bluds as the game was poised for a thrilling finish. However, Jervois did not want a tight game and stepped up the intensity at both ends of the ground with their defence restricting the Roos to just two goals whilst Rigney made sure his side stayed on top. Best for Jervois was Rigney, Woohouse and Russell Jarvis whilst Mannum’s better players were Wakefield, Rhys Bullard and Josh Gould.
At Le Messurier, Ramblers annihilated the winless Meningie with a commanding 165 point win. Things did not start well for Meningie as Ramblers booted seven goals to one in the first term to already make any chances of an upset unlikely. Meningie’s only goal came from the boot of Robert Payne but by quarter time the margin was already out to six goals. The second term was a copy of the first as Ramblers dominance in the midfield set up their forwards to add to the Roos misery. Another eight goals further put Meningie in its place as Patrick and Liam O’Neil and Troy Cowland continued their dominance over the Bears midfielders. At half time, the lead had blown right out 87 points but the demolition job did not stop there for Meningie. Again Ramblers kept up the pressure as they piled on another seven goals for the quarter and nine in the final term. Overall Ramblers had twelve goal scorers with nine of them kicking multiple goals. Ryan Morris was a standout with five goals but Liam O’Neil continued his superb run of form with four goals. Other players that played well for Ramblers were Jarryd Weyland, Patrick O’Neil and Mark Marchetti. For Meningie, the game was a dark one and something that should not be remembered but players that stood out were Chris Lawson, Michael Greenwood and Robert Payne.

In the biggest upset of the round, a fired up Mypolonga stunned the top of the table Ramblers, defeating the Roosters on their home turf. Mypolonga’s Brad Martin began the game well as his dominance in the first term helped his side stay in the game.
His three goals quickly gave the Tigers them the lead but Ramblers were able to reduce the margin with three goals of their own and these goals gave them a slender one point lead at the first break.
The second term saw Mypolonga’s defence hold strong as the three Pedler brothers were proving a handful for Ramblers. Ramblers took some time to register a goal in this term, Patrick O’Neil kicking truly late in the quarter to keep his side within two goals at the main break.
The third quarter was again a tight tussle as neither side could gain the advantage.
Both teams went goal for goal with Ramblers scoring through Tyson Matthews, Ben Dougall and Liam O’Neil but the Tigers Martin was still proving too strong as he booted through his fourth. With Mypolonga leading by just five points at the last change, Ramblers found another gear as they were able to find the first goal of the quarter. As the quarter went on, umpiring decisions were playing critical roles to the result of the match as a gesture from the crowd resulted in a set shot for Ramblers turning into a free kick for Mypolonga. Martin again was too much for his opponent, Matt Mundy as he ended up kicking six goals and helping his side to a two point victory. Best for Mypolonga was James and Joe Pedler as well as Scott Meneghetti whilst Ramblers best were Liam O’Neil and Daniel Zadow.
At Tailem Bend, the stronger bodies of Jervois proved too much for Tailem Bend as the Bluds accounted for the Eagles, winning by 74 points. With both teams finishing last year in completely opposite positions, the first quarter showed the improvements of Tailem Bend as they were able to win the quarter on the scoreboard. Goals to Michael Thomas, Dylan Hogarth and two from Wayne Luckett had given the Eagles a surprising six point lead at quarter time. From then on Jervois’ defence held strong with Tailem not even doubling their score for the rest of the game. The reigning premiers showed they are still a premiership contender as a seven goal to two quarter gave the Bluds the ascendancy at the main break. As the second half began, the heavens opened but this did not dampen the skill level of Jervois as they adapted quickly and were able to slam another six goals in the quarter. In form forward, Trevor Rigney was showing his skill in the wet as he kicked two goals for the term to only extend his side’s lead to ten goals. The final quarter saw Jervois hold off any threat that might have come with their defenders keeping Tailem to just two behinds. The win now puts Jervois equal with Imperials in second spot and with both teams playing at this week, neither side will want to drop this match.
The other match of the round was played at Meningie with Mannum finishing strong defeating the Bears by 32 points. Meningie began the game well and with the aid of the breeze were able to kick away to an early lead. Meningie’s Mark Turner was the first goal scorer of the day and was followed up by teammate Andrew Cunneen as the Bears shot out to a small lead. The first quarter was all Turners as his three goals gave his side a 15 point lead but now his side how to contend with playing into the wind.
As it showed, the wind was making the difference as the breeze gave Mannum some confidence as their midfield began to click and was rewarded with Todd Boughen booting his first goal of the game. With the resurgent Mannum closing the margin, Meningie were able to respond with Turner slotting through a fourth goal. His work was cancelled out with late goals to captain Ben Quinn and Jarryd Woodward as the Bears held on to a one point margin.
The third term saw Mannum able to control the game even though they were pressing into the wind as they dominated off and on the scoreboard. Early goals by Meningie’s Ryan Mallard and Turner only provoked the Roos as Quinn and Woodward were the stars up forward as two goals by the captain helped his side to a three point lead.
Mannum steamrolled the Bears in the final term with a commanding seven goals to two quarter to sure up the victory. Best for Mannum was Quinn and Boughen whilst Meningie’s best were Turner who finished up with six goals and Josh Robinson.

At Johnstone Park, a fired up Imperials side overcame a spirited Mypolonga, defeating the Tigers by 31 points. Kicking to the scoreboard end, Mypolonga got off to a good start with forward Brad Martin scrambling home the first goal of the game. His sides lead was to be cancelled out quickly as Imperials Roger Puckridge took a strong, courageous mark to help level up the scores. Imperials were able to provide strong run out of defense with Jason Puatti’s rebound helping his side out. With their defense holding strong, Imperials forward line started to click with Luke Harrowfield able to reward the work of his defenders with two goals and help establish a 15 point lead at the first break. The second term was a scrappy affair with the solitary goal coming from a soccer goal from the Tigers Martin. Heading into the second half with a 10 point deficit and Puckridge off for the rest of the game, Mypolonga came out with intent as they were led down back by Joe Pedler, who was trying to curb Harrowfield’s dominance.
The Tigers confidence and belief rose as they went through a purple patch with Imperials unable to contain the ruck work of James Pedler or shut down Martin who put through another two goals to bring his tally up to four. Imperials however stepped up booting the last four goals of the quarter, three to Harrowfield, to help wrestle back the lead. The final quarter saw Mypolonga dish everything they could to the Blues but a strong mark and goal to Ryan Eyre helped give Imperials a commanding lead. Things did not go the Tigers way as James Pedler was yellow carded late in the game and when Harrowfield put through his seventh, the match was out of Mypolonga’s reach.
At Jervois, the reigning premiers were only spectators as the Ramblers juggernaut continues with the Roosters winning by 66 points in a commanding performance. From the opening bounce, Ramblers were on their game as they booted five goals in the opening quarter. Their in form forward line was finding the football early with Clint Girardi and Ryan Morris booting majors for their side as at quarter time, the visitors were up by 19 points. The second term was a shootout as Jervois tried to get back in the match after Ramblers extended their lead to 37 points with three unanswered goals. For most of the quarter, both teams went goal for goal but late goals to Morris and Girardi gave Ramblers a 37 point, half time lead. The third term saw Ramblers stamp their authority on the match as they booted six goals to one to open up the game.
Defenders Joel Matchoss and Tyson Matthews were causing headaches for Jervois as their rebound was giving their forwards plenty of opportunities. The final margin of eleven goals perhaps shows a changing of the guard but there is no way to count out Jervois in June. Ramblers were able to find goal scorers everywhere with Morris ending up with seven, Girardi with six and Ben Dougall with five and this proved to be the difference as Jervois’ only prolific goal scorer was Trevor Rigney who booted five.
For the third week in a row, Mannum supporters were treated to a nailbiter as their side got over Tailem Bend in the last minutes. The first quarter saw the Roos jumped by the Eagles as their younger players in Dylan Hogarth and James Little got in the action early. An early goal to Tailem’s Darren Buckingham got the ball rolling but Mannum was able to wrestle back the lead with three quick goals and these goals helped the Roos to a 16 point lead at quarter time. The second term saw the Eagles come back into the match with Buckingham booting two more goals for the quarter and bringing his side back to within three points at half time. The third term was a scrappy quarter as the match became an arm wrestle. Goals from Ben Lambert and Justin Maloney helped the Roos extend their lead but Buckingham’s fourth kept his side within the match. The last quarter became intense as Tailem Bend came back and when Wayne Luckett booted his second, the Eagles were in front with 30 seconds to play. Unfortunately for Tailem it went from ecstasy to heartbreak as Ben Quinn’s goal from the pocket put his side in front and sealed the match for the Roos.

The cross town match between Imperials and Ramblers turned out into a one sided contest as a fired up Ramblers outfit came out of the blocks early to register a 53 point victory. Ramblers set up the game in the first quarter as their forwards of Clint Girardi, Adam Jackson and Ryan Morris made life difficult for the Imperials defence. Ramblers first minutes of the game were flawless as they booted the five goals before Imperials could get into the game. With their lead of 32 points, Ramblers continued the precession for their home supporters as they won the second term to extend their lead to 34 points at the main break. Imperials could not contain Girardi or get on top of Ramblers Luke Button. Button dominated in the back lines for the Roosters as he and Tyson Matthews continually brought the football out of their defensive half to set up numerous attacks. Ramblers coach Anythony Weyland will be happy with the game as his side ran out the match to put in a four quarter effort. Best for the victors was Button, Jackson and Girardi, who finished up with eight goals. The win assures Ramblers will hold onto top spot as all teams head into the break.
Mannum won its second match of the year, narrowly defeating Mypolonga by three points. Mannum’s Matt Connolly started well for his side as his three early goals gave the Roos a two-goal buffer at quarter time. Mannum was able to sustain this lead for the majority of the match as the defense, led by Shane Harte, kept the Tigers forwards under wraps. At three quarter and with a 15 point deficit, Mypolonga kicked into gear to reduce the margin and then get in front for the first time, in time on of the final term. Four quick goals from Mypolonga’s David Wallfried, Joel Eckermann and two from Brad Martin all of a sudden had the local’s worried but late goals to Matt Connolly and Todd Boughen gave Mannum a sniff of playing finals football later this season. Best for Mannum was Harte, Paul Sarno and Ben Quinn whilst Mypolonga’s best was James Pedler, Kieran Jaensch and Wallfried.
At Tailem Bend, the Eagles kept up their chances of playing finals with a hard fought 25 point win over Meningie. The Bears however got off to a good start with four early goals, three to Ryan Mallard. Eagles first gamer Darren Buckingham kicked the only goal for Tailem Bend in the opening term as his side was down by 21 points at the first change. The second term saw the Eagles come back as some coaching moves got more players into the game and onto the score sheet. Goals to Michael Thomas, Des Karpany and Daniel Gregory had Tailem back in the game and at half time, only trailed by four points. Tailem midfielders Dylan Hogarth and Tony Lynch were proving dominant in the third quarter and were rewarded with their forwards pushing their side in front. Buckingham was proving difficult as his third goal, helped his side out to a 22 point lead. The final term was a shootout with Tailem outscoring the Bears, six goals to five and to help Tailem hold onto their spot in the five. Buckingham finished up with five goals and Lynch and Hogarth played dominant games whilst Meningie’s best was Evan Smith and Mallard who finished up with five goals.

RIGNEY ROCKS IMPERIALS By Brendan Shakes
The Trevor Rigney show rolled into Murray Bridge on Saturday and did not disappoint as Rigney’s Jervois held on to defeat Imperials by 11 points. Playing in perfect conditions, Imperials started off stronger as forward Luke Harrowfield booted an early goal for the Blues. Harrowfield was again involved as his second put Imperials back in front but Jervois rallied late in the term and three late goals gave them a three point lead at the first break. Jervois came out of the blocks early in the second quarter with Rigney snapping his second goal of the game. This kick started his side as goals to James Jagodnik and Brett Gazzola extended the margin to 21 points. The momentum of the game had now swung to Imperials as Harrowfield booted three goals, including one on the siren to put his side in front by five points. Trailing at half time, Jervois stamped their authority on the match with a six goal to three quarter. Three goals to finish the quarter gave Jervois a 15 point margin but Imperials were kicking with the slight breeze in the final term. With no players on the bench available, Imperials looked out on their feet as Jervois were now beginning to get away from the Blues but to their credit Imperials staged a small comeback. When Imperials Josh Charles kicked truly and Harrowfield slotted his sixth, the margin was only four points but Jervois captain Russel Jarvis put through a captains goal to effectively kill off the match.
At Mannum, an under strength Ramblers held on to defeat Mannum by three points with a goal in the last minute of the match. Mannum got off to a great start to the game with Paul Sarno booting his first goal of the match. With the wind behind them, Mannum kicked away and at quarter time led by 20 points. The second term saw Ramblers use the aid of the breeze well as they kicked their way back into the match. Ramblers Clint Girardi was proving a dangerous with two goals for the quarter and by half time, the Roosters had reduced the margin to eight points. The third term was where the momentum of the match changed. The Roos were unable to capitalise on a breeze that was affecting the game as they could only manage a solitary goal for the term. The defence of Ramblers had fought off the efforts of the Mannum midfield and had set up their side to come home strong in the final quarter. Trailing by five points but having the breeze at their back, Ramblers would have looked to go on with it if it was not for the spirited Mannum defence. With goals at a premium, neither side could get on top on the scoreboard. With only minutes left, Mannum was up by three points but a strong mark and goal from Clint Girardi gave the visitors the three point victory.
At Mypolonga, the Tigers continued the misery for Meningie with a comfortable 105 point victory. With the aid of the breeze, Meningie got off to a great start restricting Brad Martin and the Mypolonga forwards to five behinds. Goals to Andrew Cunneen, Adam Bettineschi and Chad Thorpe gave the Bears a surprising 15 points lead at the first break. Any chance of an upset was erased in the second term as a revved up Mypolonga came out of the break to slam home nine goals to one to set up a six goal lead at the main break. Mypolonga’s Brad Martin finally got into the match booting four goals for the quarter as his side was now beginning to get on top around the ground. To prove they are no easy beats, Meningie came out of half time with something to prove but this was all in vain as Mypolonga kicked up another gear to only extend the margin. Mypolonga’s Tobin Naughton was Martin’s partner in crime as he bobbed up for four goals in the quarter. Down by 70 points and with a quarter to play, Meningie never gave up with early goals to Shaun Ridley and Peter McNichol but their defence was like sift as the Tigers kicked a ten goal last quarter. Mypolonga’s Brad Martin finished with ten goals and has now kicked 21 of his 40 goals against Meningie this year.

Ramblers have kept up the pressure on league leaders Imperials with a strong 136 point victory. Playing at home, Ramblers began the match well with their big time players in Ryan Morris and Clint Girardi goaling early. Girardi who was returning from injury was proving influential already as his second helped his side to a 21 point lead at the first break. Ramblers stormed out of the blocks in the second term, as Tailem Bend’s defence could not contain the key positions play or the crummers. The Roosters continued the dominance as a seven goal to two second term blew the lead out to 52 points. Things did not get much better for the Eagles as Liam O’Neil got in the action as he bobbed up for his third goal for the match. Tyson Matthew and Adam Jackson were relentless as they helped their side pile on another seven goals as by three quarter time, Ramblers were now looking at a 100 point win. Sadly for Tailem, they could not hold off the Ramblers midfield as a nine goal last term sealed a strong victory for the Roosters. Best for Ramblers was Matthews and Jackson with Girardi finishing with seven goals. Tailem’s best was Damien Raidis and Tony Lynch as well as ruckman Patrick Gabb who dominated for his side.
At Mypolonga, it was the encore performance of the Trevor Rigney show as Jervois defeated the Tigers by 37 points. The first quarter was a tough battle with both sides playing physical football. Mypolonga’s Joe Pedler was able to score the first goal of the game and when his brother George booted through his second, Mypolonga shot out to an early lead. However the Bluds began the fight back and with help from Rigney and Sam Mahony reduced the margin to seven points at quarter time. Jervois’ defence stood strong in the second term as they restricted the Mypolonga forwards to a solitary goal for the entire quarter. Rigney was proving a handful again and when his teammate Zac Ewer kicked his first the lead was steadily increasing. Mypolonga could not step up the pressure as Jervois continued their dominance to lead by 28 points at the half. The third quarter was a tight tussle as neither side could put their authority on the match as the intensity grew. With a quarter remaining, Mypolonga kept up the pressure but could not produce it on the scoreboard as Jervois’ second term dominance proved to be the difference. Best for Jervois was Steven Braun, Rigney with nine goals and Wade Mason with Joe and James Pedler playing well for the Tigers.
Down at Meningie, Imperials stayed on top of the ladder with a comprehensive 20 goal victory over the Bears. With the breeze at their back, Imperials began strongly as youngster Matthew Kowald booted the first goal of the game. The defence of the Blues was too strong for Meningie as Ryan Edwards was giving the Bears coaching staff problems. Imperials Martin Ballie was also making his presence felt as his two goals helped his side to a 32 point lead at the end of the first. The second term was evenly contested as now Meningie had the aid of the breeze but Imperials Henry Hodge and Daniel Girdham scored into the wind to dent the confidence of the Bears. Meningie Josh Robinson finally got his side’s first goal but at half time, Imperials still maintained a 39 point lead. The second half saw Imperials flex their muscles as they strangled Meningie to a paltry four behinds. The Blues forward line of Ballie and Kowald were proving pivotal with Girdham also getting in on the action. A nine goal third term saw off the Bears with Imperials Louis Paech and Tom Hines goal early. The final margin showed the dominance of Imperials as their midfielders of Roger Puckridge, Ash Temby and Girdham all made the best. Meningie's better players were Tim Saddlier, Evan Smith and Adam Bettineschi.
