BLANCHETOWN SWAN REACH WINS FLAG EASILY

Blanchetown-Swan-Reach won its first ever Riverland Independent Football League Grand Final with an easy 63-point thrashing over Ramco at a packed Cobdogla Oval on Saturday.

In just its third year in the league BSR, brilliantly lead by 2010 and 2012 Howard Duthie Medallist Dale Payne, were all over the Roosters from the outset. Payne completed his perfect season with a class display on the ball as he picked up possessions at will but he had plenty of help. The Redbacks’ spread and carry, hardness at the ball where young gun Jamie Tanner fitted that bill brilliantly, and discipline in defence where Kyle and Mark Coleman dominated, was too much for Ramco to counter.

After its five-goal opening quarter which established a 27-point lead with a pair of majors to Jed Martinson, the Roosters’ Bryce Matthews was at the end of a clever Marcus McGrath hand-pass to slot his team’s first goal. Despite ruckman Jamie O’Callaghan’s dominance at the centre bounces – the likes of Payne, Tanner, the fearless Scott Young and left footer Troy Cowland, whisked the ball away from the centre and around the stoppages.

Ramco’s ill-discipline and lack of ability to apply any forward line pressure was in complete contrast to BSR’s clean and swift ball movement. Rooster Damian Crowe’s attempt to roughen up Tanner only resulted in Ramco’s third 50-metre penalty and a goal that was amongst four more second term goals for the Redbacks. Max Baddack lifted in the quarter either up forward or on the ball for the Roosters whilst team-mate Mark McDonald booted his only goal for the game.

Ramco did enjoy a dominant period early in the third term after Baddock’s goal reduced the margin to 40 points. Crowe continued to go hard at Tanner but this didn’t faze the youngster. Tanner soon put a terrific spoil on Baddock that allowed Cowland to tear up the wing. His kick was then marked by Sam Sobey, who ran with the flight of the ball and kicked BSR’s only goal for the quarter. It proved a poignant moment in the game as it stopped Ramco’s momentum during which its players blazed the ball to the forward lines, only for either Mark or Kyle Coleman to take defensive marks.

As O’Callaghan and McGrath continued to battle manfully – it was party time for the Redbacks as it rammed home six goals in the final quarter. None came better when Scott McKenzie, a lumbering ruckman of the traditional type, whilst resting up forward, jammed the ball on his boot and watched it split the goals. A defensive Sobey grab preluded a third goal to Christopher Giles and Payne added pain for the Roosters when he received yet another 50-metre penalty and goal that added salt to Ramco’s wounds.

Matthews at least provided a target in the second half to go with his three goals and he, along with O’Callaghan, centreman McGrath and Baddock were easily the Roosters’ best. BSR’s Payne had a dream match closely followed by Tanner. Young played the perfect Grand Final match that exemplified hardness and toughness, Cowland oozed brilliance, Mark Coleman marshalled the defence and Jed Martinson was prominent up forward.

TURNING POINT: In a somewhat hapless third quarter, Ramco did have some momentum but it failed to take advantage. A superb spoil by Tanner on Baddock and the by-product was a goal to Sobey after he took the ball by running with the flight. It broke the Roosters’ back. It was game, set and match.

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: Big McKenzie’s goal when he slamming the ball on his foot late in the last quarter that delighted BSR fans on the club side. Not blessed with O’Callaghan’s mobility and spring, McKenzie at least got one-up on Ramco’s star ruckman.

BEST-ON-GROUND: Dale Payne put on a show with his clean skills where others fumbled (mainly by Ramco players). Payne’s ability to run the lines, win the contested ball and win it away from the contest was a joy to witness. Bigger things wait for this dual Howard Duthie Medallist but only if he wants too. Tanner, raging bull Young and Cowland were others who may have challenged for Payne’s ‘BOG’ honours.
