LIONS ARE THE KINGS OF LYRUP

The Lyrup Lions are the 2010 kings of Lyrup after their brilliant 28-point win over the East Murray Tigers in the Independent Football League Grand Final at a windswept and at times damp Lyrup Oval.
It was one of the great recoveries to glory by a football club – firstly from their Second Semi Final loss to East Murray two weeks earlier and secondly from their wooden spoon last placing in 2009.
This decider was played in gale-force winds and the Lions had use of the five-goal northwest wind. The Tigers handled the difficult conditions better with Brian Parsons continuing his outstanding form. His in-form team-mate Joshua Norman pounced on a loose ball to kick the opening goal.
Both sides were hard at it emphasised by Lyrup’s Brad Healy and East Murray’s Mark McConnell colliding. It preluded another major to the bleach-haired Todd Collins who was up against the boundary but somehow managed to squeeze the ball through the uprights.
If it were not for Lyrup playing-coach Sam Lloyd’s heroics, the home side would be further in trouble. Ryan Smith floated through the air to haul in a great mark on the far side wing. Lloyd continually prevented the opposition from doing further scoreboard damage and Adrian Abdulla handled the ball cleanly. Lyrup responded with successive goals to the duo and Lloyd’s 50-metre major put his side in front.
It was short-lived at the start of the second quarter. Aaron Pligl snapped an excellent goal but not before an excellent Abdulla mark between two Tiger opponents. Despite the best efforts of East Murray’s Mark McConnell on a wing and fullback Rodney Tonkin, who was having an absorbing tussle with Nathan Willmott, Lyrup’s other star players came to seize the moment.
The strength of half back David Grenfell was important for the Lions whilst the mercurial skills of Ken Karpany ignited his team. Roy Grenfell was winning the contested ball and not long after, centurion goal-kicker Willmott made the most of a dropped mark by Tonkin to put through his first and the Lions up by a solitary point.
The Tigers had the chance to regain the lead only for David Andriske to miss. Karpany played a part to put Lyrup further ahead when his quick kick found its’ way to Wayne Priest. The ex-Barmera player then got a handball back from Willmott to run into an open goal. East Murray’s agile and athletic Ryan Smith and Zak Schubert posed some problems for Lyrup. Smith was especially good when he took his opponents on running out of defence and Schubert was a target at centre half forward.
The Tigers drew first blood in the third quarter to draw within a goal courtesy of Justin Andriske but the home team, urged on by most of the large crowd, went up another level on the back of inspirational skipper Jason Marr.
Marr, who had stitches on his hand the previous day, had a hand in the next two goals. Abdulla marked a pass from his captain and his check-side shot at goal was successful. Willmott’s move into the ruck proved critical and his experience resulted in Jason Marr’s second goal for the quarter. Karpany started to win centre clearances but his best was when he received a hand pass from his captain. He then made a difficult goal look so easy.
The Tigers Daniel Fuss kicked the answering and as equally tremendous goal into the wind just before three quarter time. East Murray faced an 18-point deficit with only one more term for the year remaining.
The Lions were never going to let this one slip. Priest combined with Karpany and Scott Marr to assist Willmott with his second goal. Lyrup’s unsung heroes Josh Murphy and vice captain Adam Caputo booted goals and when Ben Roessel hung on to a high mark to slot another, the flag was Lyrup’s – their first since 2004.
Lloyd was tremendous from start to finish for the Lions closely followed by Abdulla. Roy Grenfell won a lot of hard balls for his side. Karpany’s old legs were still running on top of the heavy surface at the end of the game. Priest answered Lyrup’s prayers for a spark in the second and third terms. David Grenfell and Healy were steadfast in defence and David Grenfell was also influential when thrown into the ruck.
For the runner-up it was Parsons who was easily best with his ball-getting ability and use. Mark McConnell got a lot of it and provided run. Pligl was handy with two goals whilst Schubert, Ryan Smith and Ashley Hissey flashed in and out of the game.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: East Murray’s Ryan Smith’s ‘hanger’ on the outer wing during the first quarter rivalled Lyrup’s Ben Roessel’s beauty. Ken Karpany’s sensational running goal in the third quarter in difficult conditions was sublime skill at its very best.
TURNING POINT: East Murray’s 17 points told the tale. Todd Collin’s miss in the third could have put his side 12 points down but instead Lyrup worked the ball to the other end and made it a four goal lead courtesy of Josh Murphy’s snap.
BEST ON GROUND: Ken Karpany, Adrian Abdulla and Roy Grenfell’s class shone through and East Murray’s Brian Parsons was brilliant for his side. However, when the heat was applied by East Murray’s early inside 50’s, it was Lyrup’s playing-coach Sam Lloyd in defence who held firm. He was cool in a crisis and won plenty of the ball across half back and helped bring other players into the game with telling effect.

Paringa won a nail-biting Independent Football League grand final against gallant Wunkar by six points at Moorook Oval on Saturday when forward Anthony Lippis drilled truly after the final siren. It was one of the great grand finals in which the Bulldogs came so close to breaking their 33-year premiership drought.
There were nerves aplenty in the first term and the Swan’s Chris Gardner read the ball off the pack to post the game’s first goal. Jonathon Wood provided plenty of drive off half back for Paringa but Wunkar guns Howard Duthie Medallist Daniel Evans and ruckman Shane Schulz easily were on top of their opponents.
Young Bulldog, Nathan Brown, capitalized on an errant kick-out to level the scores. The pressure was intense with fierce tackles and wonderful smothers.
Of those was Jason Goodes’ smothering Paringa’s Tristan Jackson’s kick that ended with a goal to Daniel Evans. The Swan’s held a five-point lead following a Lippis-aided major to the impressive Craig Baxter.
The game’s intensity lifted in the second quarter that produced 12 goals – seven of which were kicked by Paringa. A desperate touch on the goal line by Swan defender John Clohesy prevented a certain Wunkar major to Adrian Lovegrove. Burly Paringa forward Dean ‘The Fridge’ Hill and the clever-leading Stephen Lehmann both booted two goals. It was not before the committed Bulldogs kicked a trio of goals that was started by the rampant Daniel Evans’ second major.
Their lead was momentary because Shannon Hissey spotted Lehmann, who was again free on the boundary. ‘Lehmo’s’ neat goal swung the momentun the Swan’s way. The decider was getting away from the Bulldogs and again Lehmann involved himself teaming with Lippis that set Gardner up for his second goal and an 18-point half time advantage.
One sensed the class players of Paringa were to blow Wunkar apart but they showed iron-willed resilience in the third quarter. Schulz began the third stanza at centre half forward. It was a move that had to be made if Wunkar had any chance. The Swans extended their lead to 25 points after Lippis’ second goal from a free and Lehmann’s ability to break free from his opponent was rewarded with two more goals to his tally. The Dogs began to challenge sparked by Harley Bennell’s two goals and when Schulz long-bomb made their defecit just eight points – Wunkar sniffed victory. They had to encounter the ‘L’ factor – Paringa’s Lehmann and Lippis.
The final quarter was of frenetic proportions and both teams went goal-for-goal. Goodes and Nick Allen joined Daniel Evans and Schulz to inspire Wunkar.
Daniel’s brother Lincoln put the Bullies a point ahead but shortly after a 25-metre penalty allowed Jonathon Wood to truly convert. Both sides gave it all in this epic in front of a massive crowd. Hill’s reflex handball ended with a floating goal and sixth to that man Lehmann. It was preluded by Schulz’s third goal.
Lovegrove’s slick handball to a running Huddleston put Wunkar ahead again. They perhaps could have been over a goal in front but not for Paringa player-coach Aarod Westley’s tackle on Bennell, who was running goal-ward on the club-side wing. The turnover culminated with Lippis slotting his third but Wunkar were not denied yet again. Daniel Evans booted his fourth and it appeared the Bulldogs were the more disciplined but Paringa rolled the dice one more time.
Swan skipper Andrew Lloyd was pushed in the back at half forward but he took it upon himself to kick a goal. His kick avoided a pack and bounced through to level the score.
Wunkar had a final forward foray when Huddleston found Lincoln Evans but his kick failed to find Josh Lawrence whose rushed kick sprayed wide. The Swans’ urgently worked the ball forward with Hissey’s probing kick within Lippis’ reach. The tall forward was awarded a free kick from high contact and then the siren sounded. ‘Lippy’ raised his arms in the air as the ball sailed through sealing a grand grand final for Paringa.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: Wunkar’s Daniel Evans desperation in the last quarter. He won the hard ball and then fed a handball to Scott Huddleston who made no mistake and put the Bulldogs six-points ahead. Paringa’s captain courageous Andrew Lloyd goal in the last term from 50 metres bounced through after the pack misjudged the flight of the ball. The goal tied the scores. Anthony Lippis was awarded a free kick after high contact was made on him. The siren then sounded with the scoreboard reading that Paringa had lead narrowly. In fact the scores were level. ‘Lippy’s’ major sealed the Bulldogs’ fate by six points.
TURNING POINT: Swan’s player-coach Aarod Westley’s tackle on Harley Bennell in the last quarter after he had threatened to break free and boot the ball deep into Wunkar’s attack. It ended at the other end, with a goal to Lippis, after linking play via Jonathon Wood and Shannon Hissey.
BEST ON GROUND: Howard Duthie medallist Daniel Evans – undoubtedly. He almost single-handedly, with four goals, won the game for the Bulldogs. He was simply magnificent and controlled the centre square. Ruck-forward Shane Schulz was a pillar of marking strength for Wunkar with his aerial supremacy and his ground play was first class. Paringa’s ‘Jono’ Wood and six-goal hero Stephen Lehmann played important roles. Brendan King’s effort in shutting down Wunkar scoring linch-pin, Sean ‘Gonzo’ Gray, went a long way in deciding the match.

MEDAL TAKEN OUT BY DALE PAYNE
BLANCHETOWN/Swan Reach on-baller Dale Payne capped off an outstanding season by winning the Howard Duthie Medal as Independent football’s best player.
The medal favourite polled in eight matches, including three best afield efforts, to finish with 19 votes, two ahead of Paringa’s Chris Gardner.
In a tense finish, 18 year old Payne earned two votes in his team’s round 16 win over Moorook-Kingston to edge clear of Gardner, who had made a late rally polling 12 votes in the final six rounds.
