Played at Port Augusta, Saturday April 14, 2007 Bye Port & WestSouth Augusta face battle to go back-to-back by Duane Sholson-SchulzWinning back to back premierships is hard to do in any competition but South Augusta Football Club will find it even harder to duplicate their success in 2006. After a stellar season finishing top of the Spencer Gulf League last year by triumphing over Central by 61 points, they have lost some key players from their championship mix. Grand Final star Dwayne Crombie has been lost to BMW in the NAFA and Darren Shillabeer has moved to Adelaide to join the North Adelaide under 19’s team. Irrespective of these losses, key ins such as Kalon Everett from West Whyalla and the talented forward Matthew McGuiness are sure to bolster South’s line up. These strong additions to coincide with an already talented side will leave South’s with a good opportunity of staying on top. Best and Fairest winner Bradley Amos will want his 2007 season to be a carbon- copy of his last. The A’ grade have been hard at pre-season training since mid January which should hold them in good stead for the business end of the season. Squad numbers have been at a consistent 25 for South’s number one team but dwindling numbers in the B’ grade has meant South’s strong tradition of blooding their juniors for future senior duties will continue. The club has placed a strong emphasis on this in the past with 80 per cent of the last four premiership teams playing juniors at the club. Along with some loss of personnel on the field South’s face a battle with finances as they rely heavily on match day bar takings and sponsors. The drought which has particularly hit Northern Areas hard coinciding with the reduction of the Spencer Gulf League to a six team competition has put further strain on the country team. This will get rid of the bye; however “It’s never healthy to see teams disappear.” Club legend and A’ grade coach Gary Kernahan said. Despite this, Kernahan believes the growth in industrial cities like Port Pirie and Port Augusta will leave his club and the competition with a good future. He also believes the Roxby Downs development has been positive for the country community. After 20 or so years minimal growth in the region the future seems positive Kernahan said. The club should also be applauded for being successful in obtaining the Living in Harmony grant through the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. With this funding the club will promote Australian values and mutual obligations in the community.
